Elisabeth M. “Bette” (Kastner) Jensen of Beverly, MA passed away on April 27, 2004, beloved mother of Henry and his wife Judith of Hamilton MA, David of Beverly MA, Patricia (Correa) and her husband Peter of Jacksonville FL, Paul and his wife Kathy of Westford MA, and Mark of Garland TX. She leaves 10 grandchildren.

Born April 4, 1927, in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, daughter of the late Hermann and Emma Maria Ida Kastner. Attended schools in Germany, Austria, England, and Wales.

As a child in Vienna, she witnessed the Nazi Blitzkrieg first hand. As Hitler’s stronghold on Austria tightened following the Anschluss, her parents, through the help of the Quaker’s Society of Friends in Vienna, managed to get her abroad on the second and last Kinder transport out of Austria. She was “adopted” by a family in Wales and would not see her parents again for eight years.

While working as a secretary in London, her building was bombed and leveled during the Battle of Britain. She survived by hiding under a large oak desk and was pulled from the rubble.

After the war, she was executive secretary to the Provost Marshall, US Forces in Austria, and later married the late Henry H. Jensen of Wilmington. The couple moved to the US. Before her retirement, she was assistant to the Dean at Essex Agricultural and Technical Institute.

Private services were April 30.
